At Black Beauty Ranch, every animal has a story. Many have endured cruelty, neglect, exploitation or years of confinement before finding their way to our sanctuary. Here, they are given something they may have never known before: safety, compassion, and choice – the freedom to choose how they spend their days and to simply be animals.

A Place Where Second Chances Begin

For more than 40 years, Black Beauty Ranch has been a refuge for animals in need. Located on more than 1,400 acres in Murchison, Texas, the sanctuary was founded in 1979 by author and animal supporter Cleveland Amory with a simple but powerful vision: providing the animals a life where they are looked after, not looked at.

Today, more than 600 domestic and exotic animals representing over 40 species call the ranch home. Many were rescued from biomedical research laboratories, roadside zoos, and the wild animal pet trade. Others arrived after experiencing neglect or abuse. At Black Beauty Ranch, their difficult chapters end, and a new story begins.

This Giving Day for Apes, we're raising $2,500 to ensure our gibbons and other primate residents continue receiving the exceptional care they need and deserve.

      🐵 Nutritious, species-appropriate meals: diets are catered to meet each gibbon’s individual needs

      🐵 Expert veterinary care: caregivers work with the gibbons through positive reinforcement to give them the opportunity to be volunteers in their care

      🐵 Dedicated daily husbandry: caregivers spend the extra time learning each animal’s behavior and personality.

     🐵 Safe, enriching habitats: our habitats are designed to mimic the native habitats of each species. The gibbons have habitats designed to allow them to               swing around and move through their habitat as they would in the wild.

     🐵 Customized enrichment that encourages natural behaviors and exploration: caregivers dedicate time in preparing creative, interactive enrichment
