Help Chicco, Emma, and Charlie come to Chimfunshi!

In 2012, Drakenstein Lion Park in South Africa welcomed three chimpanzees, Chicco, Emma, and Charlie, after the closure of a local zoo. For more than a decade, the park has provided them with safety, care, and love. Now, as Drakenstein focuses on rescuing more big cats and requires additional space for these species, it is time for the chimps to begin the next chapter of their lives. Their journey will take them to Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage Trust in Zambia, where they will finally have the chance to thrive in a spacious, natural forested habitat, a true forever home.

This Great Ape Giving Day, you can be part of their rescue.

MEET THE CHIMPS

Chicco

Chicco, male, 41 years old, has been moved a lot. He came to a zoo in the Netherlands after he was removed from a laboratory. Then he was sent to a zoo in South Africa, which was closed in 2012. Lion's Rescue created a place for him as he needed a home then. Despite being the biggest and oldest, he is not really an alpha male by character. He is a bit OCD and spends a lot of time cleaning under the electric strands on his fence.

Emma

Emma, female, 22 years old, was also born and hand-reared in the zoo in South Africa, which was closed in 2012. Lion's Rescue created a home for her as well, as she needed a new place then. She is a very intelligent chimpanzee with a strong memory and deep sense of trust. She values positive, caring interactions, so it’s important that humans are always associated with kindness and gentle experiences.

Charlie

Charlie, male, 18 years old, was also born and hand-reared in the zoo in South Africa, which was closed in 2012. He is Emma's brother. Lion's Rescue created a home for him with his 2 other friends. He is a gentle, small male who finds comfort in his beloved blankets, often snuggling up completely when he naps. Thoughtful and easygoing, he enjoys playful exchanges and prefers to trade or barter for items, showing his unique and charming personality.

For Chicco, Emma, and Charlie, arriving at Chimfunshi means:

  • Quarantine, veterinary care, and personalised rehabilitation.
  • Integration into vibrant chimpanzee communities, where they can develop more relationships with other chimpanzees.
  • A chance to rediscover natural behaviours like climbing trees, foraging, and nest building.
  • A forever home where they will never face transport, trade, or neglect again.

Most importantly, they will have safety, dignity, and the freedom to simply be what they were always meant to be: chimpanzees.
