Their Stories

They Endured Decades of Experimentation – Now They Need Your Help.

More than 60 chimpanzees at Second Chance Chimpanzee Refuge Liberia have survived unimaginable hardships. Many spent years as subjects in invasive laboratory experiments before enduring the devastating effects of two civil wars and the Ebola outbreak.

Today, they are finally safe. Across six sanctuary islands, these remarkable chimpanzees are living the peaceful, dignified lives they always deserved, surrounded by nature, compassion, and expert care. But they still depend on us for everything, including the nutritious food they need to thrive.

Help Give Them the Care They Deserve

When Humane World for Animals Liberia (formerly called Humane Society International Liberia) assumed responsibility for the chimpanzees' lifetime care in 2015, we established Second Chance Chimpanzee Refuge Liberia to give these resilient survivors exactly what the name promises: a second chance.

Every day, our dedicated team works to ensure these former laboratory chimpanzees enjoy a healthy and fulfilling life. A vital part of that commitment is providing a varied, nutritious diet that closely mirrors what chimpanzees would eat in the wild. This year, our goal is to raise $3,000 to support our produce budget.

Our chimpanzees receive meals that include nutritious favorites such as bananas, papayas, mangoes, pineapples, oranges, avocados, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, pumpkins, peanuts, and coconuts, along with fortified rice balls several times each week. A seasonal variety not only supports their health but also encourages natural foraging behaviors and provides important enrichment.
