At Second Chance Chimpanzee Refuge Liberia, we provide lifelong care to over 60 chimpanzees who now live peacefully across six sanctuary islands. Many of these resilient animals endured years of invasive experimentation and survived the harrowing impacts of two civil wars and the Ebola outbreak. Today, they’re finally safe, thriving in the healing embrace of nature and compassionate care.

Our Story We began caring for the chimps in 2015, after Humane World for Animals Libera (formerly called Humane Society International Liberia) took on full responsibility for the lifetime care of the chimpanzees and established Second Chance Chimpanzee Refuge Liberia aptly named to begin giving the chimps their second chance at a life they always deserved.

Our primary mission at Second Chance is to ensure a fulfilling and healthy retirement for these ex-laboratory chimpanzees. We take pride in our efforts to provide them with locally sourced, seasonally adaptive diets. Each meal provides a combination of vitamins, minerals, proteins, and carbohydrates—everything our chimps need to thrive. Every meal is thoughtfully created to mirror the diet of wild chimpanzees. Our chimps enjoy a carefully balanced diet of fruits and vegetables, including sweet potatoes, corn, papayas, oranges, bananas, cucumbers, mangoes, avocados, potato greens, pineapples, soursop, apples, coconuts, peanuts, and pumpkins. Three times a week, we complement this array with fortified rice balls, and from time to time, they’re enriched with special treats such as popcorn and palm nuts! Providing seasonal variety not only boosts their physical health but also offers environmental enrichment, encouraging natural foraging behavior and helping them adapt to shifts in food availability.
