At Second Chance Chimpanzee Refuge Liberia, we care for more than 60 chimpanzees living on six islands in Liberia. Most of our chimp residents were used in invasive experiments and many survived the devastating toll of two civil wars and an Ebola crisis.

This year, our Giving Days for Apes goal is to raise $10,000 toward cost to care for two remarkable chimpanzees at the sanctuary: Mallak and Juno. The incredible histories of these two chimpanzees embody the story of hardship and resilience that all of the chimps in our care share.

We began caring for the chimps in 2015, on the tails of Liberia's first-ever Ebola crisis. Funding for the chimpanzees' care had been abruptly withdrawn and the chimpanzees were facing yet another crisis. Despite the best efforts of the caregivers, many of the chimps nearly starved. With the support of a coalition of organizations, Humane Society International stepped in to provide emergency care to the chimpanzees. HSI Liberia later took on full responsibility for the lifetime care of the chimpanzees and established Second Chance Chimpanzee Refuge Liberia.

Thanks to the incredible support of our donors, we have since made several major improvements to the chimpanzees’ care, including implementing twice-a-day deliveries of nutritious and diverse food, ensuring constant access to fresh water, and instituting improved birth control measures. We employ a highly qualified care team that is responsible for the daily operations of our work in Liberia and we have been able to acquire much-needed equipment, including sturdy new water towers that provide fresh drinking water to the chimpanzees, much-needed boats and vehicles, backup generators, and a long range radio system for emergency preparedness. We are currently undertaking an infrastructure project to construct a new office site, veterinary clinic, and island enclosures for the chimpanzees. Much of the new office compound is near completion and we have entered the bidding stage for the clinic and enclosures. All of this is possible thanks to incredible supporters like YOU!

These chimpanzees have been through so much—from the painful research they endured, to two civil wars and an Ebola crisis that resulted in the deaths of many of the 400+ chimpanzees who were kept at the nearby laboratory over the decades. Please donate now to help us continue providing daily care to these resilient chimpanzees as we continue to develop the high-quality sanctuary they deserve!
