Remember, Neka was confiscated in the village of the same name as the little girl. The circumstances of her mother's disappearance remain a mystery, as she comes from a sacred forest where hunting is strictly forbidden, but one thing is certain, she is dead. Indeed, no chimpanzee mother would willingly abandon her baby of a few months. As a sacred animal, a young villager, Arnaud, took care of her for a month before alerting us.

Upon her arrival at Akatia, Neka was dehydrated, thin, and fragile due to her young age, but thanks to the care provided by Akatia, she is beginning to enjoy life again. However, misfortune seems to keep targeting Neka. A few days after her arrival, our team observed that she had difficulty chewing, using mainly her molars to chew the fruits we offer her, and she only ate soft foods. Worried about her condition, we consulted a dentist specialized in complex dental care. The diagnosis was severe: Neka suffers from generalized acute periodontitis (an infectious disease of the gums and bone), making her gums extremely sensitive and painful, requiring deep scaling down to the bone. This will be an impossible (and expensive) intervention to perform on site, as well as delicate, especially for a young baby like Neka if we want to ensure that she does not lose all her teeth.

This procedure is necessary to keep her healthy and prevent a deadly infection. Care is underway to relieve her pain pending the intervention of Valérie, our specialist, but it will not be enough.

Neka needs you! Her early life has been marked by tragedy, but thanks to your solidarity, we can provide her with the desperately needed care. The team can then help her forget the trauma of losing her family and gradually bring her back to her new family of orphans with whom she can thrive in the forest.
