Thanks to the first donation, Akatia received a 250$ ticket prize! Amazing!

I arrived in Ivory Coast in 2017, as an intern at Abidjan National Zoo. At the time I knew little about chimpanzees. Shortly afterwards I joined Akatia, an NGO formed by passionate people who work to protect primates in Ivory Coast such as the critically endangered western chimpanzee.

And then I met Hawa. Hawa is a curious, funny and naughty infant chimpanzee of about 3 years old. I spend a lot of time feeding her and watching her climbing in the trees, but our best time together is playtime! Baby chimps are an explosion of energy. Try catching Hawa when she is running after a chicken! They are also extremely empathic, as I learnt by observing how Hawa's emotions changed according to mine. She seems to understand how I am feeling.

Not long ago a new orphan arrived at Akatia, Emma! Emma still had a part of a bullet in her neck when we rescued her. It's common for adult chimps to get killed by poachers and for their babies to be sold into the pet trade. We spent a lot of time bringing Hawa and Emma together. At the beginning their interactions were short and ended in fights, but slowly the two built a solid relationship and they’re inseparable today.

E alla fine arriva… Emma.

At the moment Hawa and Emma are living in a small green space in Abidjan, too small for them and any other orphan in the future. Akatia is working hard to get suitable land to build a sanctuary. A sanctuary is fundamental for rescuing the baby chimps who go through the pet trade and would end up either killed before adulthood or restrained in captivity for the rest of their lives. Give H&Em’ a better future, help me raise money for the first chimp sanctuary in Ivory Coast!
