Help us rebuild and protect ourselves from the next floods

In August 2026, unprecedented rains sent two rivers that run through our site over their banks. For a time, it looked like one enormous river pushing directly against our perimeter wall and across some of our enclosures.

The pressure eventually pulled sections of the wall down entirely, at points that exposed our chimpanzee island to the road outside. Before we could get temporary barriers up, people could have walked straight in. Thankfully, all our animals and people are safe.

Our keepers, student interns and volunteers have been working since day one, clearing mud, debris and plastic, patching what can be patched, and keeping watch over enclosures with damaged fencing. But safe for now isn't the same as secure for the long term. This flood exposed several perimeters that need real structural rebuilding, and it's shown us where we need to strengthen our defences against future floods too, as they are getting more extreme year by year, not just patch what broke this time.

We've assessed the damage and costed the phase 1 priority repairs at $24,650 (EUR 21,232). That covers rebuilding retaining walls and bridge fencing at both rivers, replacing a 34-metre section of wall behind our chimpanzees' night dens that's now too weak from age and flood damage to simply reinforce, and excavating the ground washed out by the flood. It doesn't yet cover everything - we're still assessing damage to our river embankments, drainage and a second wall near our quarantine area, so the true cost will grow - to well over 50,000 USD ultimately - with many of these phase 2 actions also being essential before the next wet season.

But this is where we need to start. We've already had a head start: the PASA Emergency Fund gave us USD 5,000 towards this work on 24 August, the first contribution to our emergency priority repairs.
